Hanukkah Celebration

  • First Presbyterian Church (Parlor Room) 12 west 12 st New York United States (map)

What’s the Story?

Join us for an inter-generational Hanukkah celebration on the first night of the 5783 Festival of Lights. The Shul’s educational partner, the School for Creative Judaism is deep into its annual theme, the Year of the Storytellers, which looks at different Jewish storytellers from our history, and their stories. This holiday we will look at the myriad of ways we could tell the Hanukkah story, and the politics surrounding each version.

This will be a fun event for the whole family. Under the guidance of SCJ's theater-oriented teachers, kids will get to rehearse and then perform a short play that Rabbi Misha wrote for the occasion.

While our young people rehearse the play, adults will have their own program. They will hear the history of how the telling of the Hanukkah story has changed over the past two millennia. With the help of our wonderful musicians, we will examine the Hanukkah songs sung in different time periods, and through them try to make out the way the songwriters viewed and manipulated the story to fit their political and philosophic needs.

Come watch a play, light candles, light up your mind and eat Homemade Latkes provided with love from Murray's Sturgeon Shop!

“What’s the Story?” is supported in part by The Jewish Federation of North America’s “Shine a Light on Antisemitism” Initiative and is being produced in collaboration with the School for Creative Judaism.

If you can't make it in person, the event will be live streamed on our Instagram. Follow @thenewshulnyc to tune in.
