The Devotional Poetry of the High Holidays Chevrutah

ON ZOOM

Rabbi Misha Shulman

About

"The Machzor (or High Holidays prayer book) is a mirror that reflects the Jewish spirit throughout the ages. The whole gamut of Jewish history may be traversed in its pages. Interwoven into the texture of its prayers and hymns are passages from the Bible, the Mishnah, the Talmud and the Zohar. The Piyyutim, or devotional poems, created by thousands of poets and thinkers who were active from the fifth century to the sixteenth have made the Machzor a treasure-house where the national and religious genius of Israel is embodied."
(From the opening to Rabbi Misha's grandmother's Machzor)

Join Rabbi Misha as we study the origins and meaning of several of the great devotional poems that will make up much of our High Holidays this year.
