“Pilgrimage.
Three times each year, our ancestors paused their lives, gathered gifts, and set out on foot toward Jerusalem. The paths to the City of Peace became sacred routes, and those who walked them—women, men, and children—became a community of purpose.
We so often forget that our lives, too, are a pilgrimage—a journey up the holy mountain, taken in the presence of those with whom we share the road. In a world aflame, it is easy to lose sight of our destination, our purpose—the great invitation offered to us by this “one wild and precious life,” as Mary Oliver wrote.
This High Holiday season, we will seek again the pilgrim’s path — where each step is simple, and the destination is clear. We will listen closely for what the venerable Thich Nhat Hanh meant when he taught: “When you walk, arrive with every step.”
With new melodies to ancient Hebrew pilgrim songs, composed by Frank London and the members of The New Shul Band, and with the old melodies that still echo in our souls, we will gather to create together our Jerusalem-in-New-York.”

Children’s Programming
Creative, engaging, and meaningful experiences for kids of all ages.
At The New Shul, we believe the High Holidays should be a time of connection and inspiration for the entire family. That’s why we’re offering dynamic, age-appropriate programming for children during our services this Holiday season. We also pride ourselves on our intergenerational approach to many of the main services, so children will be able to choose whether to spend their time with their parents in the sanctuary, with the children’s programming in the lunch room or hanging out with their friends upstairs.
All sessions will be taught and led by educators from the School for Creative Judaism (SCJ), ensuring thoughtful, joyful, and age-appropriate experiences rooted in creativity and meaning.
Erev Rosh Hashanah:
Kids will enjoy a full-service program featuring music, games, and art. One highlight: children will create puppets that they’ll use in a special presentation on Yom Kippur. Programming will be organized by age group whenever possible.
Rosh Hashanah Morning:
Most children love attending the outdoor, experiential service with their families. Still, for those who prefer a quieter setting, we’ll have supervised play and care in the adjacent playground throughout the service.
Kol Nidre:
Children will begin the evening by joining the community for the first 20 minutes of the Kol Nidre service – an opportunity to experience the beauty and power of the moment. Afterward, kids will split into age-appropriate groups for music, stories, and games and conversations about the themes of the holiday. A separate toddler group will also be offered.
Yom Kippur Morning:
While the Tots sing upstairs, the main service will be intergenerational, with kids and teens leading parts of the service – chanting Torah, performing dramatic interpretations of the reading, and singing with the Creative Judaism Choir.
10:15 am –10:45 am: Tot Service (ages 0–4) led by Saskia Lane
An engaging, musical, and gentle introduction to Yom Kippur for little ones and their families.
11:00 am –12:30 pm: Educational and Artistic Programming (ages 5–12)
Children will break into groups (ages 5–8 and 9–12) for creative learning and thoughtful discussion through storytelling, philosophical conversation, and art.
Supervised care, games, and crafts will also be available for kids not participating in formal programming.
Pricing:
$36 per child per service or $120 for all services.
Free for New Shul Members.
