About
ֿאזְנַ֣יִם לָ֭הֶם וְלֹ֣א יִשְׁמָ֑עוּ They have ears, but cannot hear,
This passage from Psalm 115 refers to the gold and silver idols worshipped by idolaters. It also carries a message to us who ask: How often do we really listen? How often are we truly heard? What keeps us from conscious, empathic communication?
These questions become even more compelling as we approach the coming New Year holidays. How can we make our prayers more meaningful through listening? Who hears our pleas for justice or mercy or forgiveness? When we recite the vidui or communal confession on Yom KIppur, who is listening?
This Chevrutah will explore a range of texts related to listening and engage in contemplative and practical exercises to enhance our awareness and capacity to listen. After all, our essential statement of faith begins with shema, hear, listen - a spiritual call to action.
