The Spirit of Racial Justice (March 10th)
“Few of us realize,” said Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel in 1963, “that racism is man's gravest threat to man, the maximum of hatred for a minimum of reason.” This salon proceeds from the premise that Jewish history and Jewish scripture call upon us to work against the threat of racism in all of its forms. As part of an ongoing conversation on the broader topic of Jewish racial justice, we will begin by tracing some of the lines that connect anti-Black racism and anti-Semitism. We will discuss the roles of Jews of color in our congregations and communities, consider the complex historical relationship between Jewishness and whiteness, and explore key insights from Black social justice movement, (from civil rights to intersectionality to Black Lives Matter) as well as from Jewish wisdom on justice and solidarity.
