COMMUNITY

The New Shul is a downtown shul with a downtown flavor. We're inclusive, egalitarian, and independent. Our membership is proud of its diversity -- young, old, singles, couples, families, gay, straight, interfaith, questioning, and committed.

###

Membership

Purim celebrantsMembership in The New Shul means participation. Our members become involved in a variety of ways: by planning a social action event, helping to set policy by becoming an active member of our self-selecting board, the Va'ad (see below), joining our parents committee at Rishonim, our religious school, or helping to develop singles programs. These are just a few of the ways in which members help define the New Shul community.

One of the best ways to find out more about us is to speak to one of our members. We invite you to join us for an upcoming Shabbat or New Shul event. If you would like more written information or have a question, please call the office, 212-284-6773, or Niles Goldstein, our rabbi, at 718-965-8456.

The New Shul Va'ad

The New Shul's unorthodox approach to community is exemplified by our governing body, the Va'ad. We believe that participation in decision-making by a self-selected group of community members (rather than an elected Board) reflects our grassroots origins and preserves our values of inclusiveness and communal responsibility.

Va'ad meetings are stimulating and productive -- we brainstorm over drinks and dinner and try to achieve consensus through a process of respectful discussion. All New Shul members are invited to attend as observers, although active participation is limited to Va'ad members.

Any New Shul member who makes a commitment to attend one meeting a month for a term of two years (three absences per year are permitted) and to be an active participant in the life of The New Shul is encouraged to volunteer to serve on the Va'ad. For more information, please contact Amy Eichenwald at amye@newshul.org.

Committees and Working Groups

We're building The New Shul as we go, and the work takes place in committees and working groups. By joining one, you not only do your part, but help to mold the community you're a part of. It's also a great way to get to know your fellow members better. To learn more or get involved, please contact the office at 212-284-6773 or info@newshul.org.
